Purpose of Testing
- Clopidogrel (Plavix) is an anti-platelet agent. Patients with a history of atherosclerosis or embolism may reduce the incidence of death due to stroke and myocardial infarction. It works by inhibiting platelet agglutination, making arterial blood vessels less prone to thrombosis. It is most commonly used in patients with acute myocardial infarction after placing a cardiac stent.
- Clopidogrel is a prodrug and does not have antiplatelet activity per se. It needs to be metabolized by enzymes in the liver to the active form before it can have an anti-platelet clotting effect.
