Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) describe injurious effects associated with therapeutic drugs at normal doses. Some adverse drug reactions are not very serious, but others can cause drug allergy, hypersensitivity, death, prolonged hospitalization, and permanent disability. Millions of people are affected by ADR. Although most adverse drug events can be avoided with attentive patient care, some are difficult to detect/predict and thus hard to prevent in a timely manner. More than 1 million Americans are hospitalized due to ADR each year.
Since the completion of the human genome sequences, personalized medicine based on an individual’s genomic profile is now possible. Some patients with certain genetic markers may be a thousand-fold more likely to develop a severe adverse reaction to a specific drug.
